Brief History of the 911

I Crave Cars has been built around the stories that come with the automobilia we love. The story of the 911 begins in the 1930s when Dr. Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen Beetle. In 1948, Porsche started production of a sports car version of the VW called the Porsche 356. After a few years, the car took off and became commercially successful. By the late 1950s, plans were put into place to build the next generation of Porsche. In the autumn of 1963 the 911 production run started. The engine was an evolution of the air cooled motors used in the Beetle and 356. Only now it was a six cylinders instead of four. This basic air cooled configuration would be a trademark of the first generation of cars, 1963-1989.

The 911 has become a staple on the race tracks. Winning championships in various series including: rally, sports car, and endurance. A large part of the cars success on track is due to the car having a the engine in the back. This allowed for the car's nose design to be very low and aerodynamic at a time when most cars had very blunt noses.

In terms of design, the 911 has been widely successful. The basic shape has been roughly the same throughout the various evolutions.
